Keep Your Preschooler Happy: Don't Overcrowd Their Schedule

Education & Development Blog

Every parent aims to provide their child with opportunity. However, there can be such a thing as too much opportunity when you're talking about preschoolers. When parents overcrowd their young child's schedule with too many activities, such as dance or soccer—it can backfire. Not sure if you're overloading your child's schedule? Here are a few signs that indicate, yes.

Always Tired

A child that is always tired is a warning sign parents should not ignore. Children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old need somewhere between 10 and 13 hours of sleep each night, with an additional 1 to 3 hours of nap time each day.

A child that is in preschool for 10 hours a day and activities for another two hours might not get the required amount of sleep when you factor in bath, dinner and family time. As a result, the child might be sleepy often, possibly causing them to become cranky.

Doesn't Want to Attend

If your little one protests whenever you mention the idea of them going to their activity, this could also be an indication that you are taking up too much of their personal time. Yes, just like adults, young children like a period of nothing. A time to cuddle up with you, color, play in their room or play an educational game on their tablet.

When they feel like they don't have this time, they may protest. It's important to note that a child who doesn't want to attend their activity could also be a sign that they simply want to try something else, so just keep this in mind.

Not Interested

A child that is beginning to show a declined interest in an activity is also a warning sign. This is especially the case if the child used to be overjoyed about the idea of attending the class or group. A child displaying this indicator might willingly attend the class, but not really be involved.

Similar to a child that doesn't want to attend, this could be a sign that the child simply wants to have their own time and do their own thing.

For younger children, enrolling the child in a preschool program that offers a variety of activities might be all that's necessary to peak your child's interest. Of course, if they are interested in another activity, it's always a good idea to allow the child to explore. However, be mindful that you aren't overcrowding your child's schedule.
